| Chapter 1: About the World |
| This is the background of the world Atrophy is set in and the past that led up to the events from the beginning of the comic. Yay. In the year 2064 a series of events caused World War III to erupt, and the world was plunged into an era of destruction. Several years into the war, a group of people in a small country pooled their resources together and, with the help of a several brilliant scientists, created a computer system codenamed FATE that, when given large amounts of data, would predict outcomes of events with approximately 98% accuracy. This group, led by an young woman known as a terrorist leader throughout the world, called themselves La Arma--'the weapon'. With this weapon, FATE, in hand, La Arma made its presence significantly known and threatened to turn the tides of the battle. At this same time, another group of scientists, funded by large Eurasian corporations, created a weapon of mass destruction that was based on sound waves. This technology was formed into bombs which were eventually used to demolish most of the earth's landmasses, thereby allowing the heads of the corporation (and the governmental group the eventually formed) to take control of what was left of humanity. This group named themselves NTG--National Terrorism Guard--in attempt to set themselves apart from the terrorist activity that they were technically a part of, and to gain the nearby peoples' trust. As La Arma became a deciding factor in the battles, NTG pinpointed their location and fired several of the bombs they had developed at the area. When the bombs hit, however, the sound waves reacted with FATE and caused the program to form a type of conscious. The computer system became useless as the sentient being it had become seemed to vanish immediately, and La Arma was forced to lay low for several years thanks to the losses suffered due to the attack. During these years NTG set itself up as the government for the shattered nation that had once been Eurasia--the only nation with enough remaining survivors to require a government, by this point. They claimed to be working to develop a way to return the world to its previous state and protecting it from terrorists such as La Arma, but in fact they were trying to grab control over whatever they could and hold humanity at a standstill in order to form this 'new world' to their liking. Nearly half a century later, La Arma resurfaced, now led by a young woman known throughout Eurasia as an infamous terrorist--but never known by name, only by actions. This new incarnation of La Arma received information about technologically altered humans created by NTG to work as soldiers, and responded by attacking and brutally destroying three villages, one of them being the hometown of Ashe Lefouer, whose family--mother, father, sister and twin brother--were all slaughtered. He was the only survivor of this attack. After the attacks, NTG pieced together a large orphanage for the surviviving orphaned chilren of the three villages, but it was hastily thrown together and, as NTG cared little for the children, (as they were not really enhanced in any way), was not well kept up. Many children suffered disease and violence within the walls of the orphanage, and Ashe was no exception. Ten years later, La Arma struck again, this time targetting missiles on NTG's central base. NTG's sensor jamming systems, however, threw off the course of the bombs, and they ended up landing on the orphanage, effectively destroying it and killing nearly all of it's occupants. NTG, desiring to be certain that hitting the orphanage had been an error on La Arma's part, had the head of their Data Analyis Department, Rand Wheeler, investigate the incident. Wheeler, always skeptical of NTG's motives, sent his trusted partner Raime Lyssien to investigate the site... |
